Pomegranates, Etc., Fertility, Free Radicals, MSG

August 3, 2018

A study on male rats showed increased fertility by the daily administration of pomegranate extract:

“…there were a significant increase in sperm motility and a decrease in total abnormal sperm concentration of PE [pomegranate extract] group in comparison with the control group…Daily oral administration…for 6 weeks could produce a significant increase in epididymal sperm concentration and sperm motility accompanied with decreased abnormal sperm concentration that could be related with decreased lipid peroxidation…Results of the present study showed that epididymal sperm concentration and sperm motility of rats receiving PE were significantly higher than those of the control group…In addition, it was found that PE could significantly decrease abnormal sperm rate in comparison with the control. In this study, improvements observed in sperm quality may be attributed to prevention of excessive generation of free radicals…” (Asian Pac J Trop Biomed. 2013 Jul; 3(7): 563–568.)

Notice that the researchers surmise that the pomegranate may be exerting a protective effect from free radicals.

MSG, etc. (with its scores of different names) produces free radicals and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been found to be a major cause of infertility (as well as migraines, seizures, anxiety, etc).

Oxidative stress is caused by excessive production (or decreased elimination) of free radicals in cells. Antioxidants are used to counter this oxidative stress (see "The Effects of Oxidative Stress and Some of the Popular Antioxidants on Reproductive System: A Mini Review")

Therefore, I believe it is reasonable to conclude that a major aid to fertility would be the total elimination of all MSG, etc., while also including very large amounts of pomegranate, grape leaves, and in general, all the things I would do if I had neurological issues, seizures, etc. (see the post, "Introduction to Seizures: If I had Epilepsy, etc.", as well as other posts dealing with neurological issues, antioxidants, etc).

May the Lord bless His diet in us all! (Psalms 103)
