Women, children and vitamin A

There is an interesting Bible verse in Proverbs 27:

Proverbs 27:27 And thou shalt have goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.

This man is admonished to work hard with his farm and avoid day-dreaming about money or power. He is given the promise that he will then be blessed with plenty of goat milk! Indeed, goat milk is a "super food." And a man may obtain riches and power for a time, but lack good health and happiness.

For centuries, commentators have offered various ideas about why this man's "maidens" are mentioned. For example, Matthew Poole (1624-1679) writes:

"For thy maidens; who are named, because this nourishment was more proper for the weaker sex, whereas men required a stronger diet."

But this can't be the reason, since the verse says it is for this man's food, as well as his household. Therefore, men and boys are included. Some believe that "maidens" are servant-girls that the rich often had. The Bible certainly uses the word in this manner. However, often the word refers unmarried daughters:

Psalms 78:63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.

Luke 8:51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

It appears to make more more sense for the maidens in Proverbs 27:27 to be daughters, since the man is not promised riches, but lots of goat milk. Yet, it is implied that this goat milk is extremely precious.

Why then are the daughters mentioned in a special sense? He already mentioned the household. Perhaps the reason is that in the early 20th century vitamin A would be discovered. Yet, the ancients (and certainly Solomon) knew that children and women needed a lot of butter and goat's milk, and dairy in general.

The 20th-century propaganda rage against saturated-fat demonized butter, and exalted margarine. It brought multitudes to an early grave. But in this late day, even people who know better are still somewhat hesitant in regard to butter. In other words, notice how strange the following verse (v.15) appears to the modern mind:

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
15 Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Why is butter listed first, as the main thing? It would appear from this prophecy of the Lord Jesus, that children are not given enough grass-fed, chemical-free butter in the daily diet.

Notice again:

Job 20:17 He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter.

People today do not exactly "pour out" butter.

Job 29:5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
6 When I washed my steps with butter...

Likewise, Abraham prepared a meal for his heavenly visitors. He therefore made sure it was the best he could offer. What was it?:

Genesis 18:8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

Again, why does the Bible stress butter and milk? Why is the emphasis placed on butter? (And where were all the vegetables?)

The point is that too many men, women and children (but especially women and children) are suffering constant sickness, weakness, etc., and much of these things could be avoided by following God's Word, and incorporating butter and milk in the manner in which they are emphasized.

Butter and milk have vitamin A which is so crucial for the immune system, etc.

I believe that the Bible refers to the maidens when it mentions goat's milk because children and women especially need vitamin A (and all the other nutrients). And goat's milk contains 47% more vitamin A than cow's milk.

One reason butter and goat's milk are shown in the Bible in connection with women and children may be because vitamin A is so necessary for them from such sources. Women and children have a difficult time converting beta carotene (from fruits and vegetables) into vitamin A in the body!:

"The vitamin A activity of β-carotene is variable and surprisingly low in women...The vitamin A activity of β-carotene, even when measured under controlled conditions, can be surprisingly low and variable...The carotene in fruit...grains...and oils...seems to be more effective as a source of vitamin A than that in dark-green leafy vegetables...The human intestine has a limited capacity to absorb intact β-carotene..."
(The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Volume 75, Issue 5, 1 May 2002)

"Children make the conversion very poorly and infants not at all…zinc deficiency and even cold weather can hinder the conversion of carotenes to vitamin A, as does the lowfat diet…"
(Sally Fallon, Mary G. Enig)

"To overcome this deficit by eating fruits and vegetables alone, the child would need to increase portion sizes about 10-fold...Food contains vitamin A in two forms: as retinyl esters in animal foods (e.g., milk, eggs, liver) and as provitamin A carotenoids...Previously, it was assumed that 6 μg of β-carotene in all plant foods provided the same vitamin A activity as 1 μg of preformed retinol. However, recent data...reveal that the amount of β-carotene from plant foods, which provides the equivalent vitamin A activity of 1 μg of preformed retinol, is far more than 6 μg and is also highly variable among foods, ranging from 8 μg to as much as 40–45 μg...Illness worsens vitamin A status..."(The Journal of Nutrition, Volume 132, Issue 9, 1 September 2002)

"Almost half of UK women could be suffering from a lack of vitamin A due to a previously undiscovered genetic variation, scientists at Newcastle University have found...The team, led by Dr Georg Lietz, has shown that almost 50 per cent of women have a genetic variation which reduces their ability to produce sufficient amounts of vitamin A from beta-carotene."

(ScienceDaily, November 18, 2009)

Vitamin A is more necessary than many realize. And it is easier to be deficient than many realize - especially women and children.

Synthetic vitamin A (as additives to food, or supplements) is dangerous, and should be avoided, along with all other "franken-vitamins."

If liver is utilized (from fish or animals), we should be especially careful with pollutants, and vitamin A levels. We likely need more than the RDA, but excessive amounts, every day, from liver, may be dangerous.

One of the first physical things parents need to do to help avoid sickness in their children, is go 100% organic. This will do wonders. Along with this avoid cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup like the plague. Replace sweets with raw honey and coconut sugar. Parents that avoid these two things will continue to have children with weaker immune systems.

Once the above two things are in place, earlier generations were wise to give sick children a bit of cod liver oil (even healthy children were given some to avoid sickness). I believe that a warm bowl of raw butter and raw honey would also do wonders!

God asks His people, "Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick..."

This is true in regard to large, moral sins. It is also true in regard to folly. It is folly to keep doing the same thing, again and again, due to being stubborn, lazy, or addicted. May we, "touch not the unclean thing" (morally and physically), and discover more strength and blessing for a change!
